Syringe Driver Competency

About the Programme

The Syringe Driver Competency education assists Registered Nurses to obtain the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to manage syringe drivers in their place of practice and for enrolled nurses to be competent in checking syringe drivers.

This programme is delivered in two steps

  • Online – Theory and Assessment………2hrs

  • In-person – Practical Assessment……1-2 hrs

Step One: 
Participants complete an online module through Ko Awatea click HERE - an online learning tool available to registered nurses working with palliative care patients in ARC facilities, hospital or community-based providers. The online section consists of 6 modules of theory with short quizzes at the end of each module. During each module participants complete a theory assessment. A pass mark of 80% and a drug calculation assessment pass mark of 100% is required.

Step Two:
On successful completion of the online modules participants may then register through Lake Taupō Hospice to attend a 1.5 hr practical assessment session - this must be done within 3 months of completion of the online modules.

Assessments take place at Izard Hospice House, 29 Huka Falls Road.

Course’s will be held on:

  • Tuesday, 5 May 2026 at 1.30pm

  • Tuesday, 7 July 2026 at 1.30pm

  • Tuesday, 1 September 2026 at 1.30pm

  • Tuesday, 3 November 2026 at 1.30pm
