Merging Medicine and Music

NZ Doctors Quintet – Merging  medicine and music in support of Lake Taupō Hospice.

For the 11th year in a row the NZ Doctors Quintet open their rehearsal doors to the Lake Taupō community to raise funds for Lake Taupō Hospice. This talented group of professionals and musicians offer the opportunity to witness the process behind mastering one of classical music’s masterpieces, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57.

Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, rich with emotion, complexity and history was composed in 1940 during a time of intense political pressure under the Soviet regime.  It is structured in five musical movements to blend traditional forms with Shostakovich’s distinctive style. Moving from a slow, solemn prelude which builds with intensity before becoming playful – it then slows down and concludes with an upbeat and optimistic finale.

The members of the NZ Doctors Quintet who will perform Shostakovich’s award winning Piano Quintet are

  • On Piano is Dr Louise Webster a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Starship Hospital, who is also a Doctor of Music (PhD) and composer.

  • 1st Violin is Dr Anne Kim a Registrar at Palmerston North Hospital who studied music at the Royal College of Music in London.

  • 2nd Violin is Dr Allister Bush a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Capital Coast Health.

  • On cello is Dr Peter Fleischl a Roving Rural GP Locum, from Taupō.

  •   The Viola played by Susan Case who is not a doctor but can tolerate them in small doses. Susan plays in the Taranaki Symphony Orchestra.

These talented medical musicians give the public an experience of musicians workshopping a piece of music with an opportunity to provide feedback to the Quintet.
