A Day at the Races
Lake Taupō Hospice was thrilled some of our patients experienced an unforgettable, octane-fueled day at Manfeild Racetrack in Fielding with the Race4Life Charity. This special event was one in a series organised by Race4Life, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of palliative care patients across New Zealand, providing them with opportunities to experience once-in-a-lifetime thrills.
The adventure began last Tuesday afternoon when five patients, our Patient Activities Coordinator Amanda and volunteer Noel with two Family Support team members, set off for Feilding.
Wednesday brought a day of exhilarating experiences, starting with a warm cuppa and a welcome briefing. The patients then chose their adventure, from helicopter rides and motorbike trips to rides in vintage Morgans, race cars, trucks, police cars, fire engines, and even a tractor, plus other specialty vehicles.
It was a day of firsts—four of our patients were taken up in a helicopter for the first time, while two got to feel the adrenaline rush of hitting 175 km/h down the racetrack straight. Others enjoyed rides on motorbikes, trucks, and vintage cars, with each moment bringing smiles, excitement, and thrills.
We are so grateful for the organisers of this event and the willingness of our team to seize the opportunity and help create cherishable memories. The day showcased the joy and impact that Race4Life brings to palliative care patients across the country.
